a cat spends its time lavishly preening, massaging, washing, combing, and brushing its hair when it is not sleeping, playing or eating. Because prey in nature would catch its scent, a cat's instinct does not allow it to tolerate its own odor. A housecat strictly maintains this instinctive behavior, although its prey consists, at most of a toy or its food.
As soon as a cat is petted with hands smelling of soap or cremes the process promptly starts all over again. A mother cat washed, cleans, and massages its kittens several times a day. To encourage digestion, the abdomen is licked by her coarse tongue until it is gorged with blood and pinkens. At the same time, the kitten is cleaned of its excrement. The mother cat often unaccoutably nibbles off the kitten's seemingly annoying whiskers when caring for its hair.
